I’ve done many treks in Nepal, but Tilicho Lake Trekking stands out in a special way. It took us through dry valleys, steep cliffs, and high Himalayan landscapes—all leading to a lake that feels like it's floating in the clouds. At 4,919 meters, Tilicho Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world. Reaching it felt like stepping onto another planet.
Where Is Tilicho Lake?
Tilicho Lake lies in the Manang district of Nepal, within the Annapurna region. It sits beneath the towering peaks of Tilicho Peak, Annapurna II, and Gangapurna. The lake is known not only for its height but also for its color—it shifts from deep blue to icy silver depending on the light and season.
Unlike other treks that end at a base camp or summit, this one ends at a high-altitude lake surrounded by raw, untouched beauty.
How Long Does the Trek Take?
Most people do the Tilicho Lake trek in 9 to 14 days, depending on the starting point and side trips. The trek often begins from Chame or Manang, following part of the classic Annapurna Circuit before detouring toward Tilicho.
From Manang, it takes about 2–3 days to reach the lake. We passed through places like Shree Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp. The final stretch to the lake was steep and narrow—but every step was worth it.
What Makes Tilicho Lake Trekking Special?
There’s something wild and rare about this trek. Fewer crowds mean more quiet moments. We walked through dry riverbeds, rocky ridges, and windswept valleys. The trail felt adventurous but not too technical.
The lake itself was the highlight. We arrived early, with the sun just rising. The water was still, the air was cold, and the surrounding peaks glowed in golden light. It was otherworldly—a word I rarely use.
Altitude and Weather
Tilicho Lake Altitude: 4,919 meters (16,138 ft)
Trek duration: 9–14 days
Best seasons: Spring (March–May) and Autumn (Sept–Nov)
Trek difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Because of the high altitude, we took time to acclimatize in Manang. We also drank plenty of water and moved at a slow pace. Weather can be tricky near the lake—mornings are usually clear, while afternoons may bring wind or snow.
Extra Challenge: Tilicho Lake to Thorong La
Some trekkers choose to continue from Tilicho Lake over the Mesokanto La Pass, a tougher and more remote route. Others return to Yak Kharka and go over Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters), connecting back to the Annapurna Circuit. We chose the second option—and it made the journey feel complete.
Final Thoughts
Tilicho Lake Trekking is for those who want something different. It’s not just about ticking off a high-altitude lake. It’s about walking through silence, feeling the wind, and standing in a place that feels untouched by time.
This trek isn’t flashy. It’s bold, quiet, and unforgettable. If you’re looking for adventure beyond the usual trails, Tilicho is calling.
