Illuminating the Underground: The Pavement Light Company Ltd

Published: November 2025 | Leighton Buzzard, UK

Step onto the bustling streets of London and you may notice a subtle yet brilliant feature beneath your feet – shimmering glass prisms embedded in the pavement, quietly flooding natural light into the basements below. These are pavement lights, a Victorian innovation that remains as functional and beautiful today as when they first appeared in the late 1880s.

At The Pavement Light Company Ltd, we are proud to be the UK’s leading specialists in the design, manufacture, restoration, and installation of pavement lights, roof lights, and floor lights. Based in Leighton Buzzard, we serve clients across London and nationwide, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern engineering precision.

A Brief History of Light Beneath the Pavement

Pavement lights – also known as vault lights or sidewalk prisms – emerged during London’s rapid urban expansion in the 1880s. Early versions consisted of cast iron frames filled with cut glass squares. But as demand grew for brighter, more efficient illumination, pressed glass lenses replaced flat panes, and soon after, prismatic glass lenses were introduced. These cleverly angled prisms bent and directed daylight deep into subterranean spaces, transforming dark, damp vaults into usable, naturally lit areas.

From coal cellars to wine vaults, from warehouse basements to luxury residential conversions, pavement lights became an essential feature of Victorian and Edwardian architecture.

Modern Solutions with Timeless Craftsmanship

Today, The Pavement Light Company continues this legacy with both precast panels and in-situ cast panels. Whether restoring a listed building in Mayfair or designing new pavement lights for a contemporary basement extension, we deliver solutions that meet rigorous modern standards:

  • Structural Integrity: Panels capable of spanning up to 4.4 metres and supporting distributed loads of 20 kN/m².
  • Compliance: Full adherence to local authority requirements for loading, fire, thermal, and acoustic performance.
  • Slip Resistance: 100mm x 100mm glass lenses (as mandated in the 1930s) provide proven safety. Optional sandblasted lenses or chromite/carborundum-enhanced concrete surfaces available.
  • Aesthetics: Natural concrete finish as standard, with bespoke colours, textures, and surface treatments to match surrounding paving.
