Description
PhotoCraft is a free, open-source image editor developed as part of the ArtCraft creative studio. Built entirely in Rust, it provides a native desktop experience designed to feel familiar to Photoshop users while avoiding subscriptions, accounts, and browser-based limitations. The application supports essential professional workflows, including layers and groups, pixel and vector masks, clipping masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, smart objects, live type, pen paths, and a complete brush engine with pen pressure and tilt. It also includes more than 70 live-preview filters, multiple blend modes, and non-destructive editing features.
PhotoCraft can open and save layered PSD and PSB files, making it suitable for users who need to exchange projects with Photoshop users. Its GPU-powered canvas uses modern graphics technologies such as Metal, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and WebGPU to provide responsive performance across different platforms.
The software supports RGB, CMYK, Lab, and grayscale documents in 8-, 16-, and 32-bit color, along with ICC profiles, soft proofing, and gamut warnings. It also offers more than 500 scriptable commands through its command-line interface, JSON control channel, and MCP server.
Although PhotoCraft is still in an early alpha stage and does not yet support Photoshop plug-ins or generative AI features, it is a promising choice for hobbyists, students, Linux users, and anyone seeking a capable Photoshop alternative. It is available for macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and the web.
