A Brief History of Bull Durham Beer Company

Located in the heart of downtown Durham, North Carolina, the Bull Durham Beer Company made sports and brewing history when it opened its doors in 2015. Operating directly out of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP), it became the first craft microbrewery in America to be located inside a Minor League Baseball stadium and owned by a Minor League team.

The brewery was originally launched by Capitol Broadcasting Company, the parent company of both the Durham Bulls and WRAL. Situated on prime real estate just above the stadium's main entrance, the glass-fronted, 15-barrel brewing system allowed curious baseball fans to watch the brewing process live before grabbing a fresh pint on their way to their seats.

Under the early guidance of executive brewmaster Sebastian Wolfrum, Bull Durham kept its in-season lineup intentionally tailored to hot North Carolina summers, focusing on crisp, easy-drinking stadium beers. Their two most famous flagship brews were the Lollygagger Kölsch and the Water Tower Wheat. These became such local staples that they eventually saw distribution in cans at local grocery stores and tap bars far beyond the stadium walls.

In January 2019, Capitol Broadcasting Company announced the sale of the Bull Durham Beer Co. brand to Raleigh-based R&D Brewing. Despite the change in corporate ownership, the physical brewing operations remained a beloved fixture inside the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, continuing the unique tradition of brewing craft beer mere steps from the baseball diamond.
