Most of us don’t think much about our gut until it starts acting up. But digestion is tied to a lot more than what happens after a meal — it affects your energy, your skin, your immune system, even your mood. So when things go wrong down there, the effects often show up in places you wouldn’t expect.

The tricky part is that a lot of these warning signs get written off. “I’m just tired.” “Must’ve been something I ate.” “It’s probably stress.” Sometimes that’s true. But if any of the patterns below are showing up again and again, it’s worth paying closer attention.

1. You're bloated more often than not

Feeling puffed up after a big holiday meal? Normal. Feeling that way most days, even after a small lunch? That’s different. Regular bloating usually means your body is struggling to break food down properly, or that gas is building up because your gut bacteria are out of balance.

2. Your bathroom habits are all over the place

A healthy gut tends to keep a fairly predictable rhythm. If you’ve been bouncing between constipation and diarrhea, or stuck with one or the other for weeks at a time, something in your digestive tract isn’t moving things along the way it should. This back-and-forth pattern is also a hallmark of IBS.

3. Heartburn keeps coming back

Everyone gets heartburn now and then — usually after something spicy or greasy. But if it’s showing up several times a week, that’s a sign the valve between your stomach and esophagus (the lower esophageal sphincter) isn’t sealing properly. Ignore it long enough, and it can start to irritate the esophagus itself.

4. Your weight is changing, and you don't know why

If the number on the scale is moving and neither your diet nor your activity level has changed, your gut might be the reason. Poor absorption means your body isn’t pulling the nutrients it needs from food — and sometimes that shows up as unexpected weight loss, sometimes as bloating and water retention that looks like weight gain.

5. Foods you used to eat fine suddenly bother you

Notice that dairy, bread, or certain vegetables are giving you trouble even though they never used to? That’s often a sign your gut lining or enzyme production has shifted. Gluten, dairy, and high-FODMAP foods tend to be the first to cause problems once the gut becomes more sensitive.
